About the Artist

Grant Booth was born in Murwillumbah in 1945 and grew up on the family's banana plantation outside the nearby town of Mullumbimby. He attended the bush primary school at Main Arm and later went to Mullumbimby High School before moving to Sydney to study art at East Sydney Technical College.

I grew up in that magic period of the Australian automobile scene when we came of age with the production of our very own car the 'Holden'. Up until then the automotive industry was dominated by British vehicles with a mixture of large American cars thrown in.

As a child drawing and painting were a big part of my life and having a fascination for cars and trucks it's no wonder that cars and trucks were a favourite subject of my art. My older brother had taken out a subscription to the American 'Saturday Evening Post' magazine and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the magazine when it arrived, I would sit down and go through all the motor car advertisements and I knew every make and model on the American market.

At high school I would accept commissions to paint murals of American cars on fellow students schools cases and would charge 10 shillings for doing so, mind you this was a practice which didn't earn me any brownie points with the teaching staff because homework was never a high priority and always gave way to painting.

Here it is almost 70 years later and I'm still drawing cars (I also painted a lot of wildlife on the journey as well), the only difference being is that I am a lot better at it now than when I was as a kid.
